Flying Scotsman delayed
Work on the Flying Scotsman has been greater than expected and it will not be up and running until summer 2011, the National Railway Museum (NRM) has announced.

Helen Ashby, head of knowledge and communications at the York museum, told the York Press: 'Some of the components that we have now had the opportunity to strip and check ready for replacement we have found to be more worn than we anticipated.'

The museum is continuing with its Steam Our Scotsman appeal in the hope of raising the £250,000 needed to get the cultural heritage icon in operation again. So far it has raised £140,000.

In 2006 the train was found to be too old to continue its east coast line services.

Chris Beet, NRM engineering and rail operations manager, said: 'In order to fully restore Flying Scotsman, we had to disassemble the entire locomotive and begin examining every little piece. We then decided whether these pieces need to be repaired or replaced - both options being incredibly time consuming.'
